Ok, serious question.
Who thinks President Trump’s strategy when facing off against special counsel Robert Mueller is to interrupt him with shouts of, “Fake news!” every time he tries to ask a question?
Let’s face it. Trump isn’t awfully bright. He has few options. His lead attorney, John Dowd, bailed last week.
The word is that Dowd was against the idea of Trump being interviewed by Mueller and was attempting to work through that situation, but that Trump was ignoring his advice and opting for a more aggressive approach.
When Trump called in Fox News conspiracy theorist, Joe diGenova and his wife, Victoria Toensing, the MAGAsphere rejoiced, seeing this as a sign that Trump was going to fight.
DiGenova and Toensing reportedly backed out almost as soon as it was reported they were joining the team. Initial reports are that there were conflicts of interest, with Toensing representing several former members of Trump’s circle.
Trump boasted in tweets over the weekend about all the top-notch, high powered law firms clamoring to work with him, yet, he can’t seem to keep any.
Much of it is because Trump has a history of stiffing people he owes money to, and these attorneys want to get paid.
However, most of it could be because Trump is a client who won’t listen, and this could put their reputation on the line.
For now, Trump only has Ty Cobb, who is apparently on the outs with the president, and Jay Sekulow is handling the bulk of the Russia probe.
But don’t worry. High-powered help is on the way.
Isn’t it?
Ok. Maybe not.
The Daily Beast is reporting that Trump reached out to two more attorneys and both turned him down.
“President Trump reached out to Dan Webb and Tom Buchanan to provide legal representation,” they said in a statement. “They were unable to take on the representation due to business conflicts. However they consider the opportunity to represent the President to be the highest honor and they sincerely regret that they cannot do so. They wish the president the best and believe he has excellent representation in Ty Cobb and Jay Sekulow.”
Buchanan is a partner at the firm Winston & Strawn, in its Washington office. Webb is the firm’s co-executive chairman, based in Chicago, according to the firm’s website.
Gee… We’d love to, but we’ve got a thing…
So if we ignore Dowd’s leaving, that’s strike two for Trump, just since the weekend.
Meanwhile, Mueller is inching ever closer, and Trump has nobody on his team with any real experience dealing with a federal criminal probe.
Expect his Twitter time to get more desperate.
