World famous Sister Jean of Loyola didn’t get her Easter wish. Her Loyola-Chicago Ramblers were beaten by powerhouse Michigan in the NCAA semi-finals.
The Wolverines keep rolling and will play the winner of the Kansas-Villanova game played later tonight. Never before had a number eleven seed (Loyola-Chicago) reached the NCAA final game and it won’t happen again this year.
Michigan started the game in the lead but Loyola-Chicago got hot and gained the lead late in the first half. By half time the Ramblers held a 29-22 lead over mighty Michigan.
The Ramblers held onto the lead for much of the second half until with less than 10 minutes to go Michigan regained the lead. The Wolverines scored 12 unanswered points to take a 54-47 lead with less than five minutes to go in the game. Michigan won the game by 12 and the Ramblers’ dream of becoming the lowest seed to win an NCAA championship was gone.
98-year-old Sister Jean became famous as the prayer leader for the Ramlers.
Last week the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers became just the fourth 11th seed in the history of the men’s NCAA Basketball tournament to make the coveted “Final Four” by beating Kansas State.
The team’s secret weapon was its 98-year-old prayer leader – Sister Jean. Behind the sister of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s prayers, the team reached the impossible – the Final Four!
Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt led the team in prayer before many of the team’s games this year. After last week’s Kansas State game she had this to say –
Loyola-Chicago started their run with a win over 6th seed Miami of Florida.
The team won its first three games by a total of four points. After each win the team gave Sister Jean a hug –
Sister Jean is Loyola-Chicago’s men’s basketball team chaplain. She grew up in San Francisco and had a pet monkey as a child per a video from the university from 2015. She also had some nice things to say about students of this generation –
Happy Easter Sister Jean! So sorry the Ramblers didn’t make the championship but with you and their memories of you, they will always be champions. You will not be soon forgotten.
