Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) attacked Chief Justice John Roberts and issued a warning to the Court in a statement released by his spokesman Justin Goodman Wednesday afternoon in response to Roberts rebuking Schumer for threatening Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh at a pro-choice protest rally in front of the Supreme Court building Wednesday morning while inside the justices heard arguments on a Louisiana abortion law case, June Medical Services LLC v. Russo.
Schumer had screamed his threat, “I want to tell you Gorsuch! And I want to tell you Kavanaugh! You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price! You won’t know what hit you! If you go forward with these awful decisions…”

Goodman in a press release that expanded on an earlier statement warned the Court and ripped Roberts for criticizing Schumer but not President Donald Trump when he called on Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg to recuse themselves from cases involving him in response to their speaking out against him. Trump, by contrast, did not threaten the justices in his comments.
Women’s health care rights are at stake and Americans from every corner of the country are in anguish about what the court might do to them.
Sen. Schumer’s comments were a reference to the political price Senate Republicans will pay for putting these justices on the court, and a warning that the justices will unleash a major grassroots movement on the issue of reproductive rights against the decision.

“This morning, Senator Schumer spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court while a case was being argued inside. Senator Schumer referred to two Members of the Court by name and said he wanted to tell that that “You have released a whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.” Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter.”

Schumer prefaced his threat noting the case being heard Wednesday was the first major abortion rights case taken up by the Court since Gorsuch and Kavanaugh joined the bench.
