What a difference three years can make. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R – Ca.) — who was slated to become the Speaker of the House following John Boehner’s resignation from office before whispers of an affair with another House Republican derailed his candidacy — has been elected to lead the GOP caucus as Minority Leader when Congress returns in January.
Speaker Paul Ryan announced he was stepping down from the role last spring. The House Freedom Caucus attempted a run against McCarthy with Rep. Jim Jordan — whose jacket can never be found — but was defeated 159-43.
